[First four paragraphs are copied from the incomplete Wiki page here. The rest are my summary of seasons 3, 4, and 6.]
From a young age, Mark displayed various atypical abilities.[3] In elementary school, he walked through a door without opening it. In middle school, Mark pushed an older student, who flew really high into the air and had to see the nurse upon landing. He also had an out-of-body experience where time was stopped and he witnessed a neighbor experiencing a heart attack.
As he went through school, he realized that he had a love for the arts and dislike for the sciences. This started in elementary where he discovered he liked music but disliked math; and then in middle school (or high school), he took an elective in beginning photography and loved it.[3] Because of this love of the arts, Mark decided to go to art school for college, though Joan disagreed with the decision.
After he graduated, Mark left to travel the world, but was kidnapped by the AM and sent to Tier 5 for experimentation. Two years into his captivity, he was discovered by Joan, who was then fired from her job at the AM. Joan negotiated with them and it was eventually agreed that he would be released into her custody, until he went into a coma and this agreement was broken. This coma was the result of a time traveling accident that occurred in an experiment with Camille, a time traveler whose abilities allowed her to to mentally travel back in time while her body remained in the present. Camille died during the experiment and Mark, no longer able to access her ability, ended up consciously stranded in 1810 while his body in the present remained unconscious.
Mark remained comatose and trapped in 1810 for 3 years before being rescued by Joan, Sam, and Damien. With Joan's guidance, Sam traveled back in time and effectively pulled Mark's consciousness back to the present. Once he was awake, Damien used his ability to infiltrate the AM and bring Mark outside. Though he had agreed to bring Mark back home to Sam and Joan, Damien goes back on this deal and lies to, manipulates, and effectively kidnaps Mark, forcing him to come along with him on a road trip to get away from both the AM and from Joan. The two spend several months on the road together, though the relationship is manipulative, the two of them do bond. Mark manages to escape by accidentally turning Damien's ability against him, bringing the two of them back to Boston and to Joan and Sam.
There wasn't much time to recover and adjust to life in Boston though. Mark and the others had to monitor to make sure that Damien, who was obeying the wants of others around him, was okay and taking care of himself. It led to some time for Mark to catch his breath, connect with his sister and new girlfriend Sam, and be sure that The AM wasn't aally going to come after him. All of that went wrong after it became clear that Damien's powers were back and he wanted a way to protect himself from ever getting put in the position Mark had accidentally put him in ever again.
This led to Damien looking for ways to get stronger and put him directly at odds with the head of the local branch of The AM, a woman known as Ellie Wadsworth, also known as Annabelle, the aunt of one of Joan's patients. Which Mark had accidentally revealed to Damien. When Annabelle refused to help Damien and even proved resistant to his powers, Damien lashed out, and tried to get leverage over Annabelle, which meant him approaching Adam. The group, including Mark, grew fearful of how dangerous this was making Damien, and so they decided that November to withdraw to a safehouse, especially since Damien seemed to want to kidnap Adam as leverage, and even threatened to have Mark's girlfriend hurt herself if they didn't comply.
The problem with this is that while everyone was stressed and hiding at Sam's second house where no one would find them, the telepath resistant to Damien's power went out, and asked another person for help. Who Damien ran into. While Damien couldn't force knowledge from her, he knocked her out (messing up her powers for a while), and used the other to find the safehouse. There Mark and everyone was immobilized by Damien's will while Damien took Adam, saying he'd hurt Adam to get Wadsworth to comply. This led to the empath Caleb snapping under everyone's anger and beating Damien unconscious, and leaving him badly injured.
The next hour was a flurry of debate with everyone, trying to figure out what to do about everything. Mark wanted Damien helped, but he refused to see Damien handed over to The AM, not wanting him possibly trapped there, or letting The AM have his powers. In the end the others convinced him to let Damien be dropped off, and Damien was out of his life for more than a month after that.
The next year was another stressful one for Mark. He turned out not to be adjusting to life well, spending a lot of time trying to avoid his sister and his trauma by spending time with his girlfriend Sam. And drinking. There was a lot of drinking. He both encouraged and worried over Sam starting to hack AM files for the purposes of finding out more of what went on there, though he didn't know she was studying what happened to him. He also found that Damien was being released from The AM's custody.
Damien came back into their lives on accident, through meeting one of Joan's patients named Rose. Damien, brought to meet Rose's therapist (Joan of course), had made a quick exit, and the group met to deal with it. This included Mark and the others telling her about Damien's powers, his treatment of Mark, and other things. Everyone decided it was time to have Damien go, and the only one they could have do that was Mark. So Mark was faced with the need to tell Damien to leave, and he wasn't at all ready to do that, delaying the process for a while.
For a while Mark was supporting his sister and Sam in trying to create an organization to rival The AM, not knowing that she was using her time travel abilities to watch what he had been through and his torment without his consent. This would later lead to a serious argument between the two. There was also conflict over how Mark was drinking a lot more, no doubt as a way to self medicate for his trauma. None of this was helped my him finally telling Damien he needed to leave, which found him confronting Damien and learning that Damien expected everyone to move on and forgive him, and that Damien might well have feelings for him. Mark told him to leave, that everything between them was ruined, and walked away.
Later the group gathered together to watch musicals, only for Rose, a dreamwalking atypical, to reach into everyone's dreams to learn about them. Her presence seemed to cause repercussions, with good dreams turning to fearful nightmares mixed with music. Mark grew more fearful that he wasn't enough for his girlfriend and that he broke everything. He confronted Rose about it later, and confirmed it wasn't his fault, but it was likely his fears.
Later he suggested he and Sam go on the road trip they had never had, and that they didn't need to come back. This led to more division between him and Sam because she couldn't let go of her grief over the death of her parents, or moving away from the ghosts of her past, and it was becoming hard for Mark to stay. Their argument led to Sam accidentally time jumping, pulling Mark along, and his use of her powers overtook hers, leading to countless back to back jumps, often to the most traumatic points of his life, and he couldn't get out until Sam forced them out of it. Sam grew to fear that Mark might get trapped because of her power, putting their relationship into more shaky territory. Something made worse by Sam calling Damien for advice, which even Damien pointed out was the worst idea. In an effort to be honest, Sam told Mark everything at this point and he called her out on the bad ideas for it and how he was starting to be worried for her, and ultimately walked out of her apartment.
Driven by stress and grief Mark went out to drink with Rose and her friends, and stayed the night there, forgetting to check in with anyone, causing no small amount of distress. At this point another AM agent, Owen Green (who used to date Joan), came to Sam and Joan to try and find a way to oust Wadsworth from leading the AM before he was fired. This process was stressful for Mark because he didn't trust Green from his time at the AM, and soon he found his genetic material had been used to make an injection that could make non-atypicals immune to certain atypical powers. That immunity had been what had gotten Damien to go after Adam the previous fall. He did assist people in researching to find a way to stop her, which led to Owen Green and Mark's sister Joan becoming co-Directors of the Boston Branch of The AM, while Wadsworth moved to headquarters.
Ultimately Mark found himself offered a job doing photography for a former friend with a band about to go on tour. Needing time and distance from everything he took the three month gig with little warning to his sister or Sam. Sam and Mark decide to take a break in their relationship, and Mark promised his sister to stop drinking, as one of the members of the band was also trying to stay sober. This distance didn't last though, as six months into the tour the band was playing at a venue only ten minutes from where his parents lived. Mark went to go see them, having not truly spoken to them since he'd been kidnapped, only to have one of the first things they said to him be a question of whether the organization that held him against his will had fixed him.
Shattered by this question (which was rather typical of his parents), Mark immediately abandoned his job and fled back to Boston. There was no warning given to either Sam or Joan, he just showed up at The AM. This was of course a bit of a problem because it was the week The AM was closed down to minimum functions to evaluate the remaining Tier 5 Atypicals being held there for potential of release. While there he spoke with Sam and some others, while avoiding his sister.
There he met a Dr. Sharpe who was trying to address the need to test an experimental serum to suppress atypical powers. There was an ethical debate going on as the serum was needed for a sedated pyrokinetic that they couldn't wake without the risk of the man immolating himself, so consent wasn't possible. But using it on said pyokinetic without testing it on the person was also unethical. Mark, still shaken from his encounter with his parents, agreed to have the serum tested on him. While this was happening a Tier 5 atypical with a grudge tricked Joan into releasing her, and started on a murderous rampage.
Mark was almost killed during this experience, as was his sister, who the escapee was trying to use as leverage to get Wadsworth to return for revenge. In the end Mark's blood was used to replicate the suppression serum given the escaped atypical had destroyed it all. Mark worked with an atypical who could do transmutations/alchemy to synthesize a new serum, which was used not only to temporarily depower the craze atypical to allow her to be knocked out, but to stop the pyrokinetic's powers before the degradation of his condition could have burned the whole place down and a lot of surrounding area. In the end most people escaped with their lives, Mark's powers were suppressed for a few days, and Mark found that by the end of the traumatic day, Sam had sort of started a relationship with another atypical who worked there. Mark was traumatized in many new and interesting ways and alone, and had to stay with his sister who was grieving to take care of her and get his life back in order.
And then the Confluence...
